dressing for the bump :: shift dresses

one of my biggest struggles with this pregnancy has been how to dress appropriately for work. sure, i have athleisure down, but i want to look professional without having to do the standard “maternity work pants + matching blazer/button up” look. i mean, if i’m lucky enough to work somewhere with a ‘dress for your day’ policy, i truly want to take advantage of that. one of my go-to’s has been shift dresses, but in a tailored and thoughtful way. too often shift dresses make pregos look much larger than we actually are [or feel], and it’s not conducive for making one feel great while in a pretty vulnerable state. here’s a couple of reasons i love a dress/tights/boots [or booties] combo for the colder months:

  1. tights are very freeing. i wear high waisted, non-maternity, j.crew tights and they fit over the belly without being constricting. ideal. you know what’s even better? when it hits 35 degrees in minnesota and you can put your tights away for the year #winning
  2. shift dresses, when sized normal [read: do not size up JUST because you are pregnant] can actually be very flattering. if they aren’t too flowy, they’ll highlight the bump without being awkwardly tight in the middle.
  3. it’s easy. tbh, i really hate pulling up pants when pregnant [it’s a challenge], and taking them off at the end of the day is a workout in and of itself. dresses are just easy and you can layer them depending on the weather.
  4. it looks SO much more put together than wearing a standard maternity shirt + maternity bottoms.

here are a few ways i’ve worn a shift dress to stay comfy + put together:

6 1/2 months prego here

6-ish months pregnant here

here are some of my picks for some spring shift dresses – enjoy!
