we live in a time of dissension and disagreement. no, i’m not talking about the current political climate [everyone love everyone, i’ll just leave it at that]. i’m talking about protein bars. are they just churched-up candy bars? are they good for you? are they whole30 compliant? WHO KNOWS. i have unknowingly made it my mission to try pretty much all of them over the course of the past few years, and love the protein bar concept for a few key reasons.
- they’re portable.
- they *usually* taste pretty good.
- they have protein [duh].
- i can find a flavor to fit my mood.
now, i’ve also tried some bad ones, but that’s not what today’s post is about. i’m here to share some of my favorites; some of the ones you’ll find in my snack bag that i carry with me [yes, you read that right. snack bag. thank me later for that idea].
quest protein bars
i have loved these forever. now, i know they don’t have the least amount of ingredients of all the bars out there, but i listened to this podcast with the creator and feel a lot better about the diligence that went into creating them. with 20+g of protein and significant fiber in each bar, i am confident i’ts not giving me the carb spike and crash that some other bars do. here are some of my favorite flavors:
raw rev glo bars
these taste a touch ‘earthier’ than quest bars, but they are SO good and have low net carbs [meaning tons of good fiber]. pro tip: keep them in the refrigerator. i love the brownie flavored ones as a dessert moment when i’m in between dairy queen runs for the week.
bulletproof bars
the consistency of these is like a shortbread cookie, and packed with minimal ingredients and collagen as the source of protein, you can’t go wrong. another one that is a great dessert substitute, especially if you put it in the refrigerator first.
honorable mentions
ok, so these aren’t my top FAVORITE favorites, but they are still really good. the no cow bars are high in fiber [low in net carbs], and while the consistency is a little dense, it’s good for if you’re on the go and absolutely starving. it’ll definitely tide you over. the power crunch bars aren’t the best as far as ingredients, but they’re a great dessert substitute since they’re healthier than noshing on a kit kat, but taste just as good. put that one in the freezer, and you’re welcome. i wouldn’t consider them “protein bars,” but i also love larabars and rx bars as well for when i’m in a pinch or need a sweet tooth fix.
any other great protein/snack bars out there that i’m missing? let me know – comment on my latest insta or drop me a comment below! happy friday 🙂
